Jordy Reviews it!
What to stream in January 2021.
New year, new movies! While COVID has certainly impacted the film world, I’m thrilled to kick off 2021 with some exciting new streaming releases. With the Oscars extending the eligibility period through February, you can expect to see a lot of buzzed-about-films to be released in the next month or so; hoping to release just in time for consideration. The rest of the year also bodes well for us viewers, as delayed films begin to roll-out, including that massive Warner Bros. and HBO Max deal. But here’s what to stream in January 2021.
Herself (2020) | Amazon Prime Video – January 8
A struggling single mother looks to provide a fresh start for her two daughters, one that is away from her abusive ex-husband. Taking matters into her hands, quite literally, she looks to build a home herself with the support of some new friends. After premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, Herself was applauded for the way it presents and handles difficult topics. But above all, it’s an uplifting story of perseverance and strength.
One Night in Miami(2020) | Amazon Prime Video – January 15
Based on Kemp Powers play of the same name, One Night in Miami tells the fictional story of Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree), Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge), and Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) meeting in a Miami hotel in 1964. Serving as the directorial debut for Regina King, the film has garnered much-deserved praise for its story, acting and direction ― which we’re sure to see recognized this coming awards season.
Outside the Wire(2021) | Netflix – January 15
Outside the Wire stars Anthony Mackie as an engineered soldier who teams up with an inexperienced pilot (Damson Idris) to stop a global threat. The science-fiction flick looks action-packed and will hopefully deliver some great stunt sequences and thrills for our eyes. It also gives Mackie one more chance to show off his heroic star status, ahead of the March premiere of his Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
The Little Things(2021) | HBO Max – January 29
A story that’s been in the works since 1993, The Little Things stars Denzel Washington as a Deputy Sheriff who’s on the hunt for a serial killer in the Los Angeles area, while tensions build between him and the LA Sergeant (Rami Malek). Jared Leto takes on the antagonist role in this psychological thriller, which is sure to be a twisted, enthralling drama. The film also serves as the first Warner Bros. release on HBO Max (not including Wonder Woman 1984), as part of their industry-shaking deal.
The Night (2020) | VOD – January 29
If you’re in the mood for a solid horror/thriller―I know I am―The Night may just be the perfect fit. The film follows an Iranian couple, who after checking into a near-vacant Los Angeles hotel with their young daughter, find themselves disturbed by unexplained events. Having gained some great buzz, with comparisons to The Shining, this film looks sure to deliver some chilling frights with a compelling family drama alongside. It’s certainly the one I’m most intrigued by this month.
Hi! I am Jordy Sirkin, I love all things to do with film and movies! My main goal, though, is to get people excited about filmmaking in general, check out movies they might not otherwise, and form a discussion. So grab some popcorn and let’s watch some movies!
